Since its a sudden issue and only related to doc files Id blame the registry and try the following: 1. the process is still executed and working on the file so Word thinks the file is open (or trying to open) and locks it as read-only. While I left the company before any other possible solutions were implemented, one thing we were talking about was doing forced reboots by GPO at 10pm or so. Im guessing the preview handler gets stuck when trying to preview, i.e. Now try to open the Excel document and check if the problem is fixed. If it doesnt, perform Steps 1 and 3 (only). Uncheck the Read-only attribute and then click the OK button. The majority of our users did their daily reboots after awhile which cut down on this issue. Right-click on the particular Excel (xls/xlsx) document and select Properties. Anytime a user would complain about a broken file like this, we'd gently remind of the reboot policy. We had a policy that users were supposed to reboot their computers once per day, and suggested to do so at the end of the day, to ensure that programs and files were not left open. Because it’s an email attachment, Outlook saves a copy of the attachment in the temporary folder first before asking Word to open it with Read-only rights. Having run Word in no addons mode the problem still exists. I suspected a Microsoft Word addon or content in my document as possible causes of the winword.exe process not terminating. It's use of my CPU cycles remains at approximately 25 (one of my 4 cores). After doing that the user was able to open the file normally. The reason why it defaults to Reading mode is because the document is opened in Read-only mode. I've observed not only is the Winword.exe process not terminating, it's not running idly. It seems that Word periodically, and without warning, converts a file to ' read only' while it is being used. We addressed it as I mentioned in my first post - when a user reported a file was opening as "read only" we had them close it and popped into the file server to close it as well (since it was stuck showing that it was open by someone). If a Word document is marked as 'read only,' that means that you cannot save updates to the document they must be saved to a new document file.

I have tested the problem file on my laptop that is still running Windows XP. However, regardless of the circumstances, an examination of the properties for this file, at all times, indicates that the file is NOT read only. You don’t even need to reboot or issue an iisreset command. On cancelling the save, in the title bar of Word is added to the file name the suffix (Read-Only). Change the Site Lock Information radio button from Read-only to Not locked.
Central Administration -> Site Collection Quotas and Locks. Ahhh yes, this is definitely the issue we ran into then, but unfortunately I don't have a fix for it. The fix it would seem is performed via the central administration website for your server.
